What is “church”? It’s a really important question to ask, because your view of church dictates how you interact with it… whatever it is. So here are a few things that I’ve been pondering:
Is church an event/place… or a group of believers?
Is church a place for the healthy… or a hospital for the sick?
Is church for being filled… or for pouring out?
Is church something you watch… or something you participate in?
Is church something you do… or something you are?
The church is more than an event, something for you to check off your list, something you do because you’ve always done it, or a habit. It’s not a building, a time, or management structure. It’s the body of Christ; a living breathing organism. It requires all parts, working together to move in the world. I feel like often times a select group is church on Sunday mornings, and everyone else shows up to watch. This is not a spectator sport. Unfortunately, too often, I cannot, in good conscience, place myself in that group. But I desperately desire to be church, not just do church.
What about you? Is church something you do? Or something you are?
