Lessons From Summer…

Today was odd. I found out crazy news about two different people today. One an old friend from CPLS…one a newer friend from JBU.

Mandy, from JBU…got married!! Congrats to her…but it’s still very very weird to think about. People my age getting married and engaged and…weird stuff like that. CRAZY!

The other piece of news is much more somber. Some of you that read this know Blake Andrews, who went to CPLS with me (and some of you) for many, many years. I found out today that he killed himself. Apparently he turned on the car with the garage door closed and…fell asleep. It’s weird to think that he’s gone…just like that. Pray for his family.

I’m learning a strange lesson this summer. We are all so comfortable with where we’re at in our lives. We love that ‘stable’ feeling. The thing is…I’m learning there is no such thing as being truly ‘stable’. Life is so fragile, and things that take only a few moments can completely change the course of our lives, in either good or bad ways.

I’ve also learned I need to count my blessings. I have a tendency to feel sorry for myself. “I have to work sooo much!” Hah. What I am doing is nothing. I’m not dealing with the loss of a family member like the Andrews family. I don’t have to go through chemo like Matthew. Yet I still get caught up in my petty little problems.

Sometimes I’m pretty pathetic. But I’m learning. I just hope someday I’ll be able to exemplify the strength of Matthew. I know there’s no way I could get through what he’s going through with the strength and confidence he’s maintained.

High five, dude. You’re amazing.
