Growin’ that Garden

Monday during Avie’s naptime I finally made some progress on our garden box. Andrew and Arielle brought us a bunch of dirt from excavating their backyard and it needed to go into the box.

And this was after I had moved quite a bit. Oh, and yeah, that’s Seifer, just eating a rock he found in the pile.

Sunday Ansen helped me decide where to put the box, now it just needed this dirt. First I laid down some newspaper to make a decomposable barrier to the grass and hopefully keep the weeds down once we plant in it.

I thought I’d just put some of it in, after all it was hot and a lot of work…

But somehow, I managed to get it all in! I kept thinking ok, just a little more or one more bucket full and then all of a sudden it was done. And just in the nick of time, because Avie woke up!

Then, Tuesday at Walmart I managed to get 3 cubic feet of garden soil for around $6 total. A while back I had requested a free sample from Scotts, but then about a week ago I got an email saying that they were out of samples and instead they offered a $3 off Miracle-Grow soil printable coupon. I printed it and then hit the back button and printed again! (Usually these things have a limit of 2 per ip address.) Walmart had 1cu.ft for $3 something and 2 cu. ft for $10 something, but then… da-da! 1 1/2 cu. ft for $5.48, minus $3 coupon makes them $2.48!! I got 2 and used both. A total of 3 cu. ft for $5.95 (with tax) isn’t bad and it pretty much filled the rest of the box! Now if I could just plant those plants in there! Maybe this weekend?
