Build-Your-Own Sundae Bar Birthday

Being 8 months pregnant, I decided that if Avie was, in fact, going to have a birthday party, it had to be simple. I’m sort of torn between the fun, excitement of having a birthday party and “does a 3 year old really care?” I settled somewhere between, being the “guardian of birthdays” (which I recently discovered I am in a Myers-Briggs test). We can have a party, but keep it simple… or as simple as this crazy let’s-do-all-the-things momma can be. So we did a build-your-own sundae bar!

The simplicity came in very little prep ahead of time. Ice cream just has to be scooped! No cake, nothing to decorate. I even contemplated this brilliant idea of scooping and re-freezing the ice cream ahead of time but nixed it in the interest of my sanity.

I did have to make something and I got a fun new toy back in November… a Silhouette Cameo (which I am loving, btw!). I decided to cut out ice cream sundaes to decorate the treat cups (another btw, that’s what these ice cream size cups are called, if you’re searching for them online). I found these at Walmart.

I also couldn’t help but put a little ice cream cone on each of these adorable little wooden spoons I bought from Amazon.

And then… I got a little carried away with labels for the sauces and whipped cream.

Of course, at the last minute, I bought a few glass bowls & candle holders to add dimension to the decor. I only hot glued them rather than using an epoxy, but they held together for long enough to have a cute party.

Basically, here’s what I got:

  • $8 – 40 treat cups
  • $6 – 110 wooden spoons
  • $9.60 – 40 cups & 30 straws
  • $3.60 – napkins (and wet-naps, so handy!)
  • $12.50 – chocolate & vanilla ice cream (gallon size)
  • $20 – toppings: crushed Oreos, mini chocolate chips, Andes mint pieces, gummy bears, coconut, marshmallows, crushed Butterfinger, Reeces Pieces, cherries & sprinkles
  • $5.70 – sauces: chocolate, dark chocolate, mixed berry & caramel
  • $1.97 – lemonade
  • $10.95 – kraft paper & glass containers

Total = $78.32

We had quite a lot left over, so I could have bought less, particularly of the paper products. Still, not a party that broke the bank.

After all was said and done, the kids had a blast playing on the church indoor playground, eating ice cream and generally just having fun! Definitely accomplished the simple, but memorable I was going for.
